The project aims to connect Mumbai’s Eastern and Western suburbs, reducing travel time between them.

The event will take place at the Nesco Exhibition Centre in Goregaon.

In Phase 3 of this project, twin tunnels measuring 4.7 kilometres each will be built beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

The estimated cost of this phase is Rs 6,300 crore, according to a BMC press release.

Overview of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road.

The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project is a visionary venture that goes beyond asphalt and concrete; it embodies the promise of seamless connectivity, poised to change the city’s narrative. It spans 12 kilometres and serves as the city’s fourth vital corridor, connecting the eastern and western realms. It joins the esteemed ranks of Ghodbunder Road, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), and Santacruz-Chembur Link Road.

The project’s total cost is estimated at INR 12,013 crore. Its primary goal is to reduce traffic congestion and significantly shorten travel times.

Currently, the journey from Mulund to Goregaon takes about an hour and 25 minutes via Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg and JVLR. However, with the implementation of the new Mulund-Goregaon Link Road, this duration will be reduced to around 20 Minutes

Mulund-Goregaon Link Road: Project Plan

The Mulund-Goregaon Link Road project aims to create a vital east-west corridor by connecting the Western Express Highway in Goregaon to the Eastern Express Highway in Mulund. Routes such as Ghodbunder Road in Thane and Powai are severely congested during peak hours, necessitating this connection.

The Mulund-Goregaon Link Road project proposed by BMC is 12.2 km long and includes the construction of two tunnels beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The initial 4.7-kilometre tunnel will run from Film City in Goregaon to Khindipada in Mulund, with depths ranging from 20 to 160 metres.

Tunnel construction will use innovative force ventilation technology, which will ensure that no above-ground ventilation outlets disturb wildlife.

The remaining 6-7 kilometres of the corridor will include two 6-lane flyovers, one from Dindoshi Court to Film City and another at Mulund’s Hedgewar junction. Additionally, segments of the road will be widened to improve traffic flow.

The road will begin at the Mulund-Airoli signal on the Eastern Express Highway and in Goregaon on the Western Express Highway.

Four phases of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road.

Construction of a bridge near Nahur Railway Station.

Road widening between the eastern and western suburbs.

Twin tunnels will be built near Sanjay Gandhi National Park, with flyovers proposed at several intersections.

Flyovers at the intersection of the Eastern and Western Motorways.

The Mulund-Goregaon Link Road project has been approved by the National Board of Wildlife (NBWL) and the Maharashtra State Board of Wildlife and Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ).

To address the displacement caused by this project, the BMC plans to build rehabilitation facilities to house affected individuals.

Mulund-Goregaon Link Road Project – Recent Updates

As Mumbai’s skyline changes, so does its infrastructure, with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project making significant progress. Here’s a roundup of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road’s most recent news, which is shaping this transformative endeavour:

Tunnelling Towards Progress: In February 2024, the municipal commissioner provided an important update, indicating that construction of the GMLR’s 4.7-kilometer twin tunnels is on track to be completed by October 2028. These tunnels, which will extend beneath the earth’s surface, will have depths ranging from 20 to 160 metres, demonstrating the project’s engineering ingenuity.

Clearing the Path: In February 2024, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) began a critical phase of the project by demolishing 168 structures that obstructed the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road. This demolition drive targeted houses and commercial establishments, paving the way for improved connectivity between Goregaon and Mulund.

Construction Milestones: The initial phase of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road project includes the construction of the Nahur ROB, which is currently 80% complete, with the overall project expected to be completed by May 2024. The second phase includes road widening on the Goregaon (East) and Mulund (West) sections. In phase three, an elevated road will be built at the junction of GG Singh Road and GMLR, as well as another flyover at Hedgewar Junction (Mulund West). Notably, construction of tunnels at Goregaon East, including a 1.6 km box tunnel and twin tunnels spanning 4.7 km, has begun following the issuance of work orders. These tunnel projects are scheduled to be completed by October 2028.
