Phases of Construction
The construction of Mumbai Metro Line 5 is divided into phases to ensure systematic progress and timely completion. Each phase focuses on different sections of the corridor, incorporating elevated and underground stretches across Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan for seamless connectivity.
First Phase: Thane to Bhiwandi
The initial segment of Mumbai Metro Line 5, stretching from Thane to Bhiwandi, was awarded to Afcons Infrastructure. Construction began in February 2020, with the first pier top installed in Thane by January 2021. By December 2022, the MMRDA reported that 73.34% of station construction and 65% of overall work had been completed.
A significant milestone was achieved on January 22, 2023, when the 550-meter viaduct over Kasheli Creek was completed in just 123 days. That same month, Afcons successfully constructed 9.3 km of viaducts. As of June 6, 2023, MMRDA confirmed that 79% of the civil work for Phase 1 had been completed.
As of February 2024, MMRDA has released tenders for six sets of six-car metro trains for Mumbai Metro Line 5. Through the Bhiwandi Metro Station, the trains will run between Thane and Kalyan Metro Stations. The tender value, which includes many charges, is Rs. 2,640.72 crore. The train coaches will need to be maintained for 15 years by the winning bidder.
Second Phase: Bhiwandi to Kalyan
The second phase of Mumbai Metro Line 5 extends from Bhiwandi to Kalyan and is a crucial link to enhance connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been appointed to finalize the route alignment and prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
