House of Sanjiv Goenka
Sanjiv Goenka, a renowned business magnate, owns a lavish bungalow in Delhi’s prestigious Lutyens area. This opulent home is regarded as one of the most expensive in the capital.
Sanjiv Goenka has lived in the bungalow built by his great-grandfather, Sir Badridas Goenka, on a one-acre plot in the upscale neighbourhood of Alipore in south Kolkata, since his birth 53 years ago. His family moved to this property in 1948, shortly after World War II, and Goenka gets nostalgic as he recalls growing up with his eight cousins and several aunts and uncles.

The mansion is a three-story structure with 14 large rooms, including seven bedrooms, two elegantly decorated living rooms, a study/library, an entertainment room with a large TV, and a fairly large dining room for entertaining guests.

Goenka’s family, which includes his wife, son, and mother, lives on the first floor. Bedrooms in each wing overlook a well-kept garden with a lovely fountain in the centre. By evening, this space is lit up with colourful lights, creating a picturesque setting for social gatherings, he says.

Marwaris are known for their traditionalism, and Goenka is no exception. He shows us one of his living rooms that has been preserved exactly as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, with the majority of the furniture and artefacts remaining in the same location over the decades. For example, there are two bridge tables where Sanjiv’s father (Rama Prasad Goenka) could unwind with his friends in the evenings. The study, which has large cabinets containing books from all over the world, was also where RP Goenka would frequently hold business meetings.
A night at Goenka House
The Goenka family has been an avid collector of paintings and sculptures for generations, and this is visible to the untrained eye. His grandfather was a fan of Mughal miniatures, which now adorn the living rooms at Goenka Niwas. Then, along the house’s long corridors, artwork from the fifth and sixth centuries by various Indian and international artists is displayed.
There is a reason why the past is honoured in the Goenka home. “Home represents comfort, a place to relax and be myself. It’s a place where I don’t want to make too many changes; it’s where my family lives. And my family is a vital part of my life.
Sanjiv Goenka entrepreneurial ventures include Spencer’s, a well-known supermarket chain, and Too Yumm, a popular snack brand. He is also the mastermind behind the esteemed Open Magazine.
Forbes reports that his net worth is 2 billion dollars, or approximately RS 16,500 crore.
